Boston Real Estate Firm Indicted for Improper Asbestos Removal
In January 2009, a Boston real estate firm was indicted by a Worcester County, Massachusetts grand jury for alleged improper removal of asbestos.
The company is charged with violations of the Clean Air Act for their failure to file notices regarding the removal of asbestos from a 10-story building. The company is also charged with failure to comply with procedures for asbestos emissions control and improper disposal of asbestos waste.
The complaint alleges that employees of the company performed part of the demolition work (instead of hiring a certified asbestos abatement contractor) and that the demolition took place while residents were living in the building.
Exposure to asbestos is known to cause serious diseases such as mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer and asbestosis.
