ASBESTOS REMOVAL COST

Asbestos removal cost is not cheap, but can be affordable

June 29, 2010 – Asbestos, once prized for its building construction properties, is now condemned as a carcinogenic material that is best to live without. The public now recognizes that asbestos causes fatal diseases when its fibers are accidentally inhaled, so asbestos removal, a profession regulated by the state, has emerged as a new cottage industry.

Asbestos removal cost, however, will vary widely depending on the extent of its presence – and it is seldom cheap.

Asbestos removal cost can vary widely

Depending on the work involved, asbestos removal cost can range anywhere between $500 to $30,000.

Certain asbestos abatement contractors require a minimum fee as high as $2,500, even for small jobs. Others will charge $500 for a small amount of asbestos ceiling removal or to remove insulation around a 10-foot section of pipe.

But if your home has asbestos in the ceilings, basement, floors, walls, roof and pipes, complete asbestos removal cost could be as high as $30,000 or more. It is an unusual case when asbestos is found everywhere.

Complete removal in a 2,000-square-foot home will usually cost about $2,000 to $4,000 on average. If you shop around, you’ll find competitive prices.

To help keep asbestos removal cost to a minimum, it is advisable to hire two different contractors – one to conduct the inspections and another to perform the actual asbestos removal. If the same company does both the inspections and the removal, there could be a conflict of interest.

Ask an independent inspector to identify any asbestos in your home, where it is located, and if it causes a potential health problem. This can help you avoid unnecessary removal work and ultimately lower costs. The inspector will also identify where the asbestos can be contained (or encapsulated) instead of removed, which will also lower the asbestos removal cost.

Ask the inspector to do the inspection before the work is started and then once again, after the work is completed. When the work is completed, ask your asbestos removal contractor to provide you with a written statement specifying that all required procedures were followed in accordance with state regulations.
