ASBESTOS REMOVAL JOBS
Upstate New York Public Library shuts down for asbestos removal project
Asbestos removal jobs in public buildings are now on the rise as town and city coordinators allocate funds to protect the public against asbestos diseases, such as mesothelioma.
FEATURE STORY
November 19, 2009 - Once cherished for its fire- and heat-resistant properties, asbestos has left a legacy of cancer deaths among civil servants that town fathers are only now correcting through professional asbestos removal projects for public buildings.
One of these asbestos removal jobs, typical of many now underway in small towns across America, began this fall at the James Prendergast Public Library in Jamestown, N.Y. The $800,000 project has closed the library since September.
Library board members considered the level of asbestos dust and other public safety concerns before deciding to close the library indefinitely.
The job started out as a simple replacement of light fixtures in both the main reading room and the children's section, but then mushroomed into a much larger task that requires the removal of asbestos insulation in the ceiling. Workers are also removing library carpeting and asbestos floor tiles.
Asbestos removal job crews will move bookshelves, computers and other equipment from one section of the building to another to prevent cross-contamination between the four sections of the library that are slated for abatement. After professional asbestos workers finish with the main reading room, cleanup efforts will move to the children's room.
Asbestos removal jobs are long overdue
The library has not undergone any renovation work in more than 30 years, so many local observers consider the project long overdue. Funding came from a wide variety of charitable foundations and state library renovation grants. No city or county taxes are earmarked for this project.
