Two upstate contractors found guilty of violating federal asbestos removal laws
NEWS UPDATE
October 29, 2009 – Two Utica, NY, brothers were found guilty yesterday on all counts in a federal asbestos removal and conspiracy trial.
Paul Mancuso was accused of running an improper asbestos removal operation. He had been previously convicted in Oneida County Court and not supposed to be involved in an asbestos business in any way, directly or indirectly.
His brother Steven was accused of conspiracy for covering up the operation.
Both men will be sentenced February 24. Paul Mancuso faces up to 10 years in prison, while Steven Mancuso faces up to five years behind bars.
Dangers of asbestos removal
Government sources estimate that in the next decade more than 35,000 people nationwide will be diagnosed with the deadliest form of asbestos-related cancer, mesothelioma. Approximately 3,000 persons die every year in the United States from mesothelioma.
Asbestos exposure can occur at home or in the workplace through everyday products such as: asbestos shingles, asbestos ceiling tile, asbestos insulation, brake pads, boilers and more.
