Demolition of Mill Silos in Roanoke, VA Will Include Removal of Asbestos
In June 2009, the Roanoke Times reported that demolition would soon begin at the site of the former Mennel Milling silos, which have been a part of the Roanoke landscape for more than 90 years. The city has obtained permits for removal of asbestos and is awaiting approval on demolition permits.
The former Roanoke City Mills property was purchased in 2008 from the Carilion Clinic. The site is adjacent to the future home of the Virginia Tech/Carilion Medical School and Research Institute and another Carilion office building.
The project will include asbestos removal and demolition of 16 75-foot silos, three 135-foot silos, a two-story building, a six-story building and a 135-foot masonry structure.
The company overseeing the demolition hopes to have the project underway so as not to interfere with the construction of the medical school facilities.
Exposure to asbestos is known to cause serious illnesses such as mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer or asbestosis.
