Rockford, MI Contractor Fined for Asbestos-Related Demolition Violations
In July 2009, the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) assessed fines totaling $4,700 against a Rockford, MI area contractor for asbestos violations relating to the April 2009 demolition of a house.
This fine was assessed in addition to earlier fines of $1,500 and $250 assessed against an area funeral home that owned the property and the City of Rockford for violations relating to the use of the property for fire training.
All three entities were fined for failing to identify asbestos in the building and take proper precautions before beginning a renovation/demolition project.
MIOSHA regulations require owners of all buildings constructed prior to 1981 (with the exception of properties where the homeowner resides) to have the property inspected for the presence of asbestos-containing materials (ACM) prior to any repair, renovations or demolition.
Exposure to asbestos is known to cause serious illnesses such as mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer or asbestosis.
