Asbestos an Issue in Planned Demolition of Sioux City, IA Building
In February 2009, Sioux City, IA officials announced they had selected a contractor to oversee the demolition of the city’s historic KD Station building. The six-story structure was originally a meat packing plant, but had been converted into a retail and entertainment complex. Since the building contains asbestos, the demolition contractor must ensure that all asbestos-containing materials are removed in accordance with state and federal regulations.
Locals had expressed concern about the company selected for the job due to problems they encountered during a 2002 implosion project in Omaha, NE. That implosion caused significant structural damage to neighboring businesses and a gas line in the area to rupture.
However, a company representative issued a statement addressing those concerns, advising that the problems at the Omaha site were ultimately determined to be the fault of the explosives subcontractor. He also stated that since the building contains asbestos, the site will not be demolished by implosion.
Exposure to asbestos is known to cause serious diseases such as mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer and asbestosis.
