Asbestos exposure and tobacco smoking threaten the health of your children
Asbestos inhalation and tobacco smoking heightens the risk of lung cancer. The combination can be deadly to the health of children as well as to adults.
“When parents smoke at home, they put their children’s health at risk,” said Sarah Perl, the Health Department’s Assistant Commissioner for Tobacco Control.
“Secondhand smoke causes damage to children’s developing lungs," she said. Making your home smoke-free is the best way to protect children from the dangers of secondhand smoke.”
Asbestos exposure dramatically increases the health risks when smoking is also involved.
Keep in mind that your children may have to face additional health consequences as a result of secondary exposures to both asbestos and cigarette smoke, a combination that increases the likelihood of developing lung cancer.
