STOVE-TOP PADS
Stove-top pads can contain dangerous asbestos compounds
February 4, 2009 – Of the many home products that could contain asbestos, stove-top pads are one to be aware of, especially if they are old, worn or beginning to rip. That’s because in the past, stove-top pads were manufactured with asbestos compounds to utilize the mineral’s famous heat-resistant property.
Asbestos, unfortunately, also has an infamous property. Airborne asbestos fibers escaping from older home products – torn stove-top pads, for example – can get lodged in the lungs and lead to serious respiratory illnesses that include lung cancer, asbestosis and mesothelioma.
Replace old stove-top pads immediately
Though newer stove-top pads do not generally pose a risk of asbestos exposure, new pads, like older worn pads, should be replaced if they begin to fray or develop cuts in the material. And if pads are old and beginning to show signs of wear, the need to change them is even greater.
Asbestos was more common in older stove-top pads. A stove-top pad made before 1990 should be replaced immediately with a new one, especially if it is showing wear. Avoid picking up a new stove-top pad at a garage sale. You don’t know how old it is, nor what it is made of. It may contain asbestos, which could put your family at risk.
The truth about asbestos
Despite the potentially fatal health consequences associated with asbestos exposure, asbestos is still imported and used in the United States. The United States imported and used an estimated 1,820 tons of asbestos in 2007, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
Government sources estimate that in the next decade more than 35,000 people nationwide will be diagnosed with the deadliest form of asbestos-related cancer, mesothelioma.
