Asbestos Found at Middle-High School in Tupper Lake, NY
In March 2009, The Adirondack Daily Enterprise reported that asbestos was found in the hallway ceilings of a middle-high school in Tupper Lake, NY.
During the 1980s, work was done at the school, and asbestos was removed from the ceilings at that time. However, traces of the dangerous carcinogen were discovered during an inspection of the building related to the planned addition of fire doors in the school’s stairwells.
The school district plans to have the asbestos encapsulated rather than having it completely removed. The costs associated with sealing the asbestos are significantly less than estimates for removal, since removal would involve removing plaster ceilings and additional costs for electrical work.
Exposure to asbestos is known to cause serious diseases such as mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer and asbestosis.
