Utica, NY City Hall Closed Due to Asbestos Concerns
On February 25, 2009, the Utica, NY City Hall building was closed after asbestos was found in building stairwells. A subcontractor company hired by the city to perform an energy efficiency analysis of the building was determined to have been responsible for the asbestos to have been disturbed, causing harmful dusts and fibers to be released into the air.
The building will remain closed while the asbestos is being removed and required air testing is performed. A city spokesperson advised the building will remain closed for the remainder of the week.
Exposure to asbestos is known to cause serious diseases such as mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer and asbestosis.
