The National Park Service (NPS) and the American Revolution Center (ARC) are currently embroiled in a dispute regarding property at the Valley Forge National Park in Pennsylvania.
The two entities have been at odds over the construction of a conference center at the Valley Forge National Historical Park. While the ARC wants to construct the building on NPS property, the NPS wants the new building to be built closer to the Valley Forge Park.
At issue is that the NPS-recommended site is in an area close to landfills containing asbestos. The park property includes land that was acquired from a former asbestos factory that was in operation 1925-1977. In 1997, asbestos was found on the park grounds, and Pennsylvania EPA supervised the removal of asbestos in approved landfill locations.
