Could you have been exposed to asbestos? Read the following to see if you fall under a category at risk. The following is a list of those with elevated hazard of developing an asbestos-related disease:
- Anyone with breathing problems;
- Individuals with extended exposure to asbestos;
- Individuals who think they have had ongoing exposure to asbestos;
- Immediate family members of those who have worked in asbestos-related industries, even if the individual who worked with asbestos has no visible symptoms or respiratory issues.
In general, there is a group of diseases that result from asbestos exposure: Asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung) and lung cancer. The most commonly known symptoms of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, the tangible warning signs of asbestos exposure can appear up to 25 years after primary exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.
It is recommended to seek a medical opinion if you imagine that you have been exposed to asbestos. Initial testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Additional tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. At times, medical professionals may speak a language unclear to the layman. As a patient, you should be sure to question your medical professional about your situation. If you don't totally grasp your doctor, ask her to put it in plain words so you can better understand.
Weitz & Luxenberg believes that all citizens who have participated in the U.S. Armed orces should receive the benefits they deserve. This includes compensation for potentially fatal diseases such as mesothelioma.
