New York-based company charged with asbestos violations
February 27, 2009 -- A steel and sheet metal fabricating company based in Jamestown, New York, has recently been charged with a number of violations in connection with the removal of asbestos from steam pipes.
Blackstone Business Enterprise Inc. faces up to $273,000 in fines, according to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Blackstone’s violations include:
- Failure to provide the company’s temporary workers with the proper protective equipment to limit risk of asbestos exposure;
- Not providing workers with the proper asbestos abatement training; and,
- Failing to monitor the air for asbestos levels.
Blackstone was charged with a total of 18 violations and has 15 business days to respond to OSHA. The company can comply and pay the fines, request a conference with the director of OSHA, or contest the violations in court.
