Historic Casino Theater in Ware, MA to Be Demolished After Asbestos Removal
On May 28, 2009, the town of Ware, MA announced they were seeking to compel the owners of the 100 year old Casino Theater to have the structure repaired or demolished. The building is contaminated with hazardous materials, including asbestos.
The action is being taken in light of an April 7, 2009 inspection of the building by the town, when it was determined that the interior was unsafe. Ware town officials are also concerned that the exterior of the building was unsound, leaving visitors to the town’s Veterans Memorial Park, which is adjacent to the theater, may be at risk for injury.
The town has learned that the costs for asbestos remediation and demolition could cost approximately $100,000.
Exposure to asbestos is known to cause serious illnesses such as mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer or asbestosis.
