Asbestos and waste disposal
August 2, 2010 – Asbestos is a toxic building and insulation material that kills approximately 10,000 people in the United States every year. Asbestos exposure is most frequently caused by work-site inhalation of errant asbestos fibers. Occupational asbestos exposure can lead to deadly diseases like asbestosis and mesothelioma, but usually many years after the initial exposure.
Due to the asbestos-containing materials' extreme toxicity and omnipotent presence in public buildings and homes, ships and automobiles, federal, state and local laws now govern the handling of asbestos waste materials, especially in regards to its disposal.
FEDERAL RULES
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulates the list of National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP). The NESHAP regulations govern the emission of asbestos containing material. Questions concerning the federal regulations for asbestos materials should be directed to the EPA Region II asbestos coordinator at (212) 637-4042.
