ASBESTOS WASTE PILES
Children played in waste piles of asbestos
vermiculite
Children playing in waste piles risk asbestos exposure.
Determining past non-occupational asbestos exposures for the Spokane facility is difficult because no air samples were taken outside the facility.
Neighbors who lived near the site before the plant closed in 1974 report that children would jump from the roof into piles of vermiculite ore on the north side of the facility.
Air samples near piles of stoner rock taken for a study in Minnesota revealed asbestos fiber concentrations in air to be 13.5 f/cc.24
If the asbestos levels were similar at the Spokane plant, these children were potentially exposed to high levels of asbestos in air.
