Hotel in Wheeling, Ohio to be Inspected for Asbestos
In March 2009, the Ohio County Health Department will be inspecting the interior of the long-closed Rogers Hotel in Wheeling, Ohio. The hotel, which was built in 1915, closed in the 1980s and was condemned in 1994. Among the many health concerns with regard to the abandoned building is asbestos.
In an attempt to determine ownership of the structure, the City Solicitor’s office searched county property records. That search led to findings that the property changed hands several times in the past 15 years, and additional research will be required to determine the current owner. Once the city determines the legal owner of the building, action will be taken with the owner in order for asbestos removal and demolition to proceed.
Exposure to asbestos is known to cause serious diseases such as mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer and asbestosis.
