W.R. Grace/Zonolite Site
Hamilton Township, NJ
EPA has made substantial progress in cleaning up the W.R. Grace/Zonolite Company site in Hamilton Township, New Jersey. Soil at the site was contaminated with asbestos, which was contained in raw vermiculite shipped to the facility from the/W.R. Grace/Zonolite mine in Libby, Montana. Additional soil removal work is scheduled for Spring 2006.
The site, located at 15 Industrial Drive, was used to make vermiculite-based products such as structural fireproofing, thermal insulation for masonry products, lightweight concrete aggregates and horticultural vermiculite.
EPA is currently conducting an assessment of public parks and residences near the site to determine whether asbestos may have been carried by the wind from the former plant and deposited on soil at nearby homes.
