MassDEP Assesses Penalty for Asbestos Violations in Holyoke,
Massachusetts
Holyoke - MassDEP penalized Santa Cruz Contractors, of Woonsocket, R.I.,
$17,780 penalty for improperly handling asbestos at a
building on Pearl Street in Holyoke, Massachusetts.
MassDEP asbestos inspectors responded to a
complaint from tenants at the site regarding the removal of cement-based
asbestos roofing, known as transite. MassDEP personnel found that Santa Cruz had
performed the work without prior notice to MassDEP and had left pieces of the asbestos on the lawn and driveway.
Additionally, a dumpster filled with dry asbestos-containing material was found in the
driveway. Santa Cruz retained a licensed asbestos contractor to clean up the site.

“We have seen first-hand how asbestos has wreaked havoc on Americans working in naval shipyards, automobile plants, and the construction industry. Most often this is through their employers’ conscious choice for profits over a worker's health.”
