MassDEP Assesses Penalty for Asbestos Violations in Springfield, Massachusetts
Springfield - MassDEP issued a penalty in the amount of $18,700 to ACT Abatement Corporation of 18 Broadway Street in Lawrence. MassDEP observed that ACT Abatement had improperly removed asbestos-containing siding material, known as transite, at two different two-family houses belonging to the West Springfield Housing Authority.
This is the second time that MassDEP has penalized ACT Abatement. In 2003, ACT was penalized $15,000 for asbestos violations occurring at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst.
Springfield - MassDEP assessed a penalty of $34,000 to Baystate Home Guard, Inc. of 38 Dawes Street in Springfield. The penalty resulted from an inspection of the company's asbestos waste storage trailers on Chapel Street in Springfield.
During the inspection of the facility, MassDEP personnel found that an asbestos waste storage trailer was unlocked and had no asbestos warning signs posted on or around it, and that there were improperly sealed and improperly labeled asbestos waste bags stored inside the trailer.
The inspectors also observed dry asbestos waste on the ground around the trailer. The company will pay $7,000 of the penalty, with the remaining $27,000 suspended during a one-year probationary period.
