A hospital in upstate New York is facing $110,000 in federal fines for its alleged improper handling and disposal of asbestos during a renovation project, the Buffalo News reported on June 18, 2008.
The U. S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration said that in December, 2007, when part of the hospital was closed for renovation work, the health system failed to take any safeguards when disposing the asbestos.
According to the article, OSHA inspected the area after an employee complained about the lack of safety measures taken when clearing asbestos-containing material, such as decontamination of clothing and use of respirators.
There were 17 citations issued, all related to asbestos.
