Asbestos Lawsuit: Residents and Staff Were Exposed in Assisted Living Facility
CBC News reported on February 27, 2008 that a class-action lawsuit has been filed against the owners of an assisted living facility in Calgary, charging that staff and residents were unknowingly exposed to asbestos.
A statement of claim filed in December indicates that several buildings within the complex were renovated in 2002 contained large quantities of asbestos.
The claim allege the asbestos was not properly removed and staff and patients were not told about it.
Asbestos is a carcinogen mineral once widely used for many industrial purposes. It can be found in ceilings, walls and pipes.
It becomes a health hazard when the asbestos fibers are inhaled and become lodged in the body, increasing the chance of developing diseases, such as mesothelioma, a deadly cancer of the lungs.
Sadly, such cases of entirely avoidable exposure to asbestos are quite common. Since 1986, our lawyers have dedicated themselves to helping those with mesothelioma and other asbestos-related illnesses seek compensation for themselves and their families.
