Pneumoconiosis is a disease caused by the accumulation of mineral or metallic particles in the lungs and the tissue reaction to their presence. Five factors which contribute to the development of pneumoconiosis are:

• size of the particles
• duration of exposure
• individual susceptibility

Silicosis, a form of pneumoconiosis, is a condition of the lungs caused by the inhalation of silica dust and marked by nodular fibrosis (scarring of the lung tissue) resulting in shortness of breath.

Silicosis, in its advanced stages, is progressive even if the individual is removed from exposure. Silicosis is an irreversible disease.
