Industrial plumbers risk asbestos exposure and related illnesses such as mesothelioma and lung cancer
Throughout the United States, millions of tons of asbestos were used to manufacture products for buildings and industrial installations. Because of this, even today, those working in the building maintenance trades, including plumbers, continue to be at significant risk for exposure to this harmful carcinogen.
A research study on asbestos-related disease in
plumbers and pipefitters employed in building construction, by authors Sprince
NL, Oliver LC, McLoud TC, confirmed the health risks of exposure.
The
researchers assessed asbestos-related disease in a group of 153 plumbers and pipefitters.
The
major finding in the research study was "bilateral pleural thickening in 28
(18.3%) of the participants."
Pleural thickening is one of several
industrial illnesses (others include pleural plaques, asbestosis, mesothelioma and lung cancer) that is caused by exposure to
asbestos.
It occurs most often in people who have worked with or around
asbestos at some stage in their life. Pleural thickening usually affects both
lungs and this is known as bilateral pleural thickening.
It is a
condition where the membrane surrounding the lungs becomes scarred and
thickened, due to inhaled asbestos
fibers that have passed through the lungs.
From shipfitters, pipefitters and demolition workers, to those toiling
on railroads and in construction, Weitz & Luxenberg has many clients whose
needless and entirely avoidable exposure to asbestos ultimately led to them
developing asbestos-related diseases.
