Worker who cut asbestos cement pipes receives compensation from manufacturing company for mesothelioma diagnosis

A dying man has received compensation from a manufacturing giant for developing an asbestos-related disease while working with their cement pipes products, reported the Courier Mail in Australia on April 22, 2008.

The man, who is just 52, was given three months to live at the start of this year after being diagnosed three months earlier with mesothelioma.

According to the article, court documents indicate he was exposed to asbestos fibers while working as a laborer for two different businesses in Australia in the 1970s and 1980s.

His duties reportedly included sanding back asbestos cement walls and cutting asbestos cement pipes. The man said he regularly inhaled asbestos dust, and also would become covered in the fibers.
