Building official Waller, who was fired over various violations including one involving asbestos presented a defense.

Waller said an oversized garage was approved because there were conflicts between the county's planning and building codes. "I didn't even know this was a problem until the building was up," Waller said.

Santa Marrone, a retired claims manager for a title company, said the oversized garage near her home is just one example of a widespread pattern of inappropriate buildings or structures lacking appropriate inspection approval.
