An annual fashion show in the United Kingdom will donate money to the The Mick Knighton Mesothelioma Research Fund (MKMRF) for those with asbestos disease, according to the Shields Gazette on June 17, 2008.
The fund was first founded six years ago by the wife of a man who died from mesothelioma in 2001, the Gazette reported.
The aim of the fund is to promote greater awareness of the disease, while raising vital funds to sponsor research, said a spokesperson.
Mesothelioma cancer, which is caused by asbestos exposure, affects the lining of the lung, or occasionally the abdomen.
According to the article, at least 5,000 people will die each year in the UK as a result of being exposed to asbestos at some time in their life.
There is currently no known cure for mesothelioma. However, research and clinical trials are taking place to try to identify treatments that may help.
The dangers of asbestos exposure are all-too familiar to the attorneys in the Weitz & Luxenberg P.C. Asbestos Litigation unit here in the United States.
