Building official Waller dismissed over improvements involving asbestos
Former building official Waller was fired over various building improvements including some involving failure to comply with asbestos regulations
According to a letter by Moreno dismissing Waller, he acted without authorization in 2001 by approving changes to a contract for improvements to St. Charles Place, a building the county had agreed to lease for 20 years to serve as home to the CalWorks department. The contractor billed the county for more than $300,000 in unexpected charges, and the county eventually struck a deal to pay the builder $170,000 extra.
