Woman in Blacon, England Found to have Suffered from Mesothelioma (pronounced "mezotheleoma")
According to the Chester Standard, Joan Mackin, of Egerton Road,
Blacon, was 84 when she died on January 6 last year at the Hospice of the Good
Shepherd in Backford after suffering from mesothelioma (mezotheleoma) on the
lungs.
Mackin had one son, James Liam Mackin, who gave evidence at a
hearing regarding her death.
He said: "She was a secretary and worked in
Chester Engineering and she did some tank lagging there. The tanks were lined
with asbestos.
James Mackin was quoted as saying his mother tried to work
out when she got mesothelioma. "She worked through the war years and in those
days offices were lined with asbestos," he said.
The inquest heard Mr.
Mackin had worked at Marley Roof Tiles but that it was not thought his wife came
in contact with asbestos through him.
Her son said: "She didn't wash his
overalls so did not know where she had contracted it, but when she worked for
the Royal Bank of Scotland on City Road she was heavily involved in building
there."
A CT scan of her chest also revealed Mrs Mackin was suffering
from mesothelioma.
Mesothelioma is usually caused by workplace exposure
to airborne asbestos fibers. It is a preventable disease that is frequently the
result of an employer’s choice for greater profits over worker health safety. If
you or a loved one have recently been diagnosed with mesothelioma, and are
