Asbestos Found in Newark, Ohio Office Building
No matter the age or condition of a building, the danger for exposure to asbestos is there.
In June 2007, several
people working in the Newark, Ohio, Municipal Building noticed large amounts of
dust coming from a renovation project to replace the vents that supply heat, air
conditioning and ventilation to the building.
Those dusts and debris
contained asbestos.
The Municipal Building had been constructed in 1967,
with a fourth floor added to the building in 1977. A representative for the
company performing the vent renovation project had noticed that the ceilings in
the building had shown evidence of improvements performed after 1981, when
asbestos products should not have been used.
The good news: For the
workers and visitors to this Ohio Office building is that tests performed after
the asbestos was removed showed no further asbestos in the area.
The not
so good news: Since the latency period for developing symptoms of an
asbestos-related disease after exposure can be more than 20-30 years, it will be
decades before any of the people exposed to asbestos at the Municipal Building
will know if there were consequences to their exposure.
