Work on new pollution controls at a generating plant in Charles County was halted because asbestos might have been disturbed in the construction area, according to the Washington Post on March 23, 2008.

Federal occupational safety standards set the limit for exposure over an eight-hour work shift at 0.1 fiber per cubic centimeter of air. Exposure to asbestos has been linked to lung damage and disease.

The plant is reviewing whether proper procedures were followed, a statement said.

However, many of the contracted workers who have been working at the plant said they wanted more information on the incident.
