Workers unions call for more asbestos research, safety measures, and compensation for those with asbestos illness
Unions have called on the federal government to launch a national inquiry into asbestos in Australia, reported the Sydney Morning Herald on April 28, 2008.
According to the president of the Australian Council of Trade Unions,
Australia has the highest rate of recorded mesothelioma in the world.
That
organization would like the government to examine ways to eliminate asbestos, a
known carcinogen, from workplaces and
homes. The ACTU would also like it to research possible compensation and
treatment for those affected.
These requests come on the eve of
International Workers Memorial Day, which remembers the two million workers around the world who have died
in the past 12 months.
The ACTU estimates around 6,700 Australians die
every year from workplace injuries or disease, said the
Herald.
Sadly, this situation is all too familiar to the attorneys in the Weitz &
Luxenberg P.C. Asbestos Litigation unit here in the United States.
