My mother was diagnosed with asbestosis. What treatment options are available to her?

We are sorry that your mother is suffering from asbestosis. How she ultimately fares will depend on the avenue of medical treatment she wishes to pursue.  On this page, Weitz & Luxenberg has assembled a list of several feasible treatment plans for asbestosis. It is important that you know that there is no cure for asbestosis. The following treatments are intended to ease your mother’s symptoms so that she can have the best quality of life possible.

Drug Therapy:

Pain Medications: To ease your mother’s pain, your doctor may prescribe pain medications such as Tylenol. Stronger medications can be used to “limit coughing and infection from fluid buildup in your mother’s lungs.” (E How)

Bronchodilators:  These can ease any shortness of breath that your mother suffers, by “relaxing the airway muscles.” (E How) Ventolin, Serevent, Proventil, Maxair, Primatene, Accu-Hale and Xopenex are common brands.” (E How)

Alternative Treatment:

Your mother may wish to bypass traditional treatment in favor of alternative methods. She may consider, “acupuncture, meditation, massage therapy, nutritional medicine or herbal remedies.” (E How)

Acupuncture: Acupuncture was pioneered in ancient China and is widely believed to “relieve and even cure some diseases and ailments. It will involve specific needle placement in pressure points across your mother’s body.” (E How)

Meditation: Meditation has been shown to reduce stress. It can be done just about anywhere at any time and may help your mother “reflect and find inner peace” (Pick the Brain) in the midst of her medical turmoil.

Massage Therapy: Massages are not just a luxury- it has known clinical benefits. It has been practiced since antiquity and can provide your mother with much needed relief from tension headache and body pains.

Nutritional Medicine/Herbal Remedies:  Your mother might consider various nutritional medicines or herbal remedies.

Surgery:

If it is deemed appropriate for your mother’s particular case of asbestosis, her doctor will commence surgery. Surgery is usually only done after much consideration, because there is a great amount of risk involved.  The doctor can perform a biopsy, usually by withdrawing fluid from your mother’s lung. Alternatively, he can perform a lung transplant, which is a more serious procedure. Survival rates from lung transplants are approximately 80% a year from the transplant and 60 % after four years.” (E How)
