Understanding Autism
A recent Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) study estimated that one out of every 150 U.S. children over the age of 8 suffers from a form of autism. Approximately 560,000 Americans under 21 are believed to have a form of the disorder. While families and caregivers struggle with the care of an autistic child or family member, they also struggle with public acceptance and understanding of their loved one’s disability and the public’s perception of autism.
When autistic patients experience episodes of extreme or disruptive outbursts in public, both the patient and family are made to suffer the consequences of what some may deem as an unjust reaction to the outburst.
Several cases in the news have involved:
- A California
man who was ousted from a health club for screaming
- A boy from North
Carolina, who was removed from a plane before takeoff after a disruptive
outburst
- A South
Carolina girl, who was ordered to leave a restaurant by the town’s police
for an episode of crying
- A 13 year-old boy was banned from attending Mass at his family’s Fargo, North Dakota parish for what was determined to be continual disruptive and dangerous behavior
Many parents say their autistic children are misunderstood, and that they are sometimes unable to predict or prevent a public outburst. And parents, caregivers and advocates for the autistic community all agree on one vital issue: that autistic children, despite their handicaps, require socialization outside of the family setting.
