In recent news, ABC News reported that a recall on the diabetes drug Avandia may come soon due to studies concluding it increases the risk for cardiac problems such as heart attack.
Drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline may ultimately have to pull Avandia, its multi-billion dollar diabetes pill, if two U.S. Food and Drug Administration reviewers are successful in their quest to remove it after numerous studies linked Avandia to cardiac problems.
In the ABC article, Dr. Richard Besser discusses the FDA's review of Avandia.
The Agency's recommendations on Avandia were included in a paper written by the Senate Finance Committee.
Avandia, a type 2 diabetes medication (generic name: rosiglitazone), is considered to be as effective as its leading rival pioglitazone (Actos).
However, the government report concluded, use of the drug is responsible for a "substantial excess number" of heart attacks and heart failure cases that would not have occurred if patients were taking Actos instead.
Two FDA epidemiologists concluded that "Rosiglitazone should be removed from the market" due to its link to cardiac-related health concerns.
