Back in 1999, the pharmaceutical company SmithKline Beecham secretly initiated a study to determine if its diabetes drug, Avandia, was safer for the heart than a rival pill, Actos, manufactured by Takeda.
The study’s results, according to an article by the New York Times on July 13, 2010, completed that same year, were disastrous. Not only was Avandia no better than Actos, but the study also provided clear signs that it posed greater risks to the patient's heart.
Unfortunately, according to the Times piece, instead of publishing the results, SmithKline Beecham spent the next decade attempting to cover them up. The company did not make the results available on its website or submit them to federal drug regulators, as is required in most cases by law.
Hundreds of pages of documents released by the FDA reveal much more about the possible dangers of Avandia. One FDA reviewer looked at dozens of studies and found Avandia increased the risk of death, stroke or heart attack by 44 percent.
Avandia compensation resources
People who took the diabetes drug Avandia and suffered a heart attack or other serious health effect may be able to hold the drug's manufacturer responsible for Avandia compensation money.
