Elevated risk of heart attack from Avandia use may have been hidden
Avandia and heart attack risk
It has been reported that the manufacturer of Avandia, GlaxoSmithKline PLC, may have tried to conceal the elevated risk of heart attack associated with the use of Avandia.
The news report stated that when a study published in 2007 linked Avandia to increased heart attack risk, GlaxoSmithKline publicly denounced the study’s conclusions. However, the company’s internal e-mails indicated that some of the company’s scientists were aware of the increased risk of heart attack associated with the use of Avandia.
Eventually, near the end of 2007, GlaxoSmithKline added a “black-box” warning to Avandia stating that the drug can cause or exacerbate congestive heart failure. Additionally, GlaxoSmithKline denies concealing the possible dangers associated with Avandia use.
