Avandia Recall
Release of Senate Committee on Finance Report Prompt FDA Claims for Recall of Avandia, Drug Prescribed to Treat Type 2 Diabetes
A February 2010 press release issued by senior members of Senate Committee on Finance regarding FDA and pharmaceutical company oversight of Avandia lead to calls for a recall of the drug. The study cites research showing a link between the use of Avandia and an increased risk for heart attacks or other serious cardiac complications.

The release of the findings from a two-year study and investigation conducted by the U.S. Congress Department of Finance about Avandia has led to intense speculation that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) may now issue a recall of the diabetes drug.
As of February 22, 2010, a number of reputable print, television and TV news sources have cited confidential FDA sources stating that the FDA may ask GlaxoSmithKline (Glaxo), the company that markets the diabetes drug, to issue a voluntary recall.
2007 Study
At issue is a 2007 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine which evaluated Type 2 diabetes patients who were taking Avandia. The study results showed that Avandia patients had a 43 percent higher risk to have a heart attack or suffer other serious cardiac events than patients being treated with other drugs.
Later in 2007, the company revised their patient labeling information to advise that Avandia could cause or increase the chances that patients could develop congestive heart failure.
Finance Committee Report
In January 2010, the Congressional Finance Committee issued a 342 page report about the drug and the company’s actions in light of the Journal of Medicine study. In particular, the report discusses whether Glaxo had been forthcoming with regard to the number of Avandia patients who subsequently suffered a heart attack or other serious heart problem while taking the drug, and whether the company had provided that information to the FDA, physicians and patients in a timely manner.
