Veterans Affairs Severely Limits Use of GlaxoSmithKline's Avandia Drug
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has announced that it will now restrict the availability of GlaxoSmithKline's Avandia, a Type 2 diabetes drug.
According to the FDAnews Drug Daily Bulletin, the VA conducted its own safety review following one by the Food and Drug Administration, and concluded that Avandia, known generically as rosiglitazone, "may not afford the same margin of safety as alternative drug therapies."
Following this decision, reported the FDAnews, the VA opted to not prescribe Avandia, and only make it available for those patients who have an existing prescription for the drug.
In a New York Times article on the VA's decision, Dr. Jon LeCroy, a senior pharmaceuticals analyst, said Avandia prescriptions had declined about 60 percent.
