AVANDIA NEWS UPDATE: 7-15-10--After a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) panel meeting to discuss the safety of the diabetes drug Avandia, the panel ruled the drug should either be withdrawn or have Avandia sales severely restricted. The FDA action was taken because of the drug's significant risk for heart attacks, strokes and other potentially fatal heart problems."
Weitz & Luxenberg is also investigating cases where diabetes patients taking either Avandia or Actos subsequently suffered bone fractures. Both post-menopausal women and men taking the drugs in combination with certain diuretic drugs (known as "loop diuretics") are at particular risk for bone fracture injuries.
Back in 1999, the pharmaceutical company SmithKline Beecham secretly initiated a study to determine if its diabetes drug, Avandia, was safer for the heart than a rival pill, Actos, manufactured by Takeda. The study’s results, according to an article by the New York Times on July 13, 2010, completed that same year, were disastrous. Not only was Avandia no better than Actos, but the study also provided clear signs that it posed greater risks to the patient's heart.
Avandia background: November 14, 2007--Second Black Box Warning
Due to the risk of heart attack, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued its strictest warning on Avandia.
The FDA announced that the manufacturer of Avandia (rosiglitazone), GlaxoSmithKline, has agreed to add information to the existing boxed warning on the drug's label about possible increased heart attack risk. The drug is also marketed as Avandamet and Avandaryl.
In May 2007, an analysis of over 40 clinical studies raised concerns about the potential cardiovascular complications associated with taking Avandia. Researchers found that Avandia significantly increases the potential for heart attacks in patients as compared with other diabetes medications or a placebo.
