Actos, an oral diabetes medication marketed in the United States by the Japanese-based pharmaceutical company Takeda, is prescribed to treat patients diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. Since Actos was first approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 1999, the medication has been given to tens of thousands of men and women.
Actos Fracture Risks
In August 2010, the results of a medical study of Actos, Avandia and other diabetes drugs known as thiazolidinediones (TZDs) has linked Actos and Avandia to an increased risk of unexpected bone fractures.
The study, which was conducted by a physician at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, studied post menopausal Type 2 diabetics, as well as men who were taking TZD drugs in combination with diuretic drugs known as “loop diuretics.”
The research study’s findings showed that these patients face a greater fracture risk than in diabetic patients. The results of the study are to be published in a Fall 2010 medical journal published by the Endocrine Society.
Other Health Problems Associated with Avandia
The news that Avandia use may be linked to bone fractures is yet another problem for GlaxoSmithKline, the company that markets the drug in the United States. For several years, both Glaxo and Avandia have been the subject of medical investigations by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regarding adverse health outcomes associated with the use of the drug. In particular, Avandia has been linked to heart attack, stroke and other cardiac complications.
In July 2010, an FDA Drug Safety Panel met to hear testimony and review documentation about Avandia. The majority of the FDA Panel vote resulted in recommendations to either suspend the sales of Avandia in the U.S. entirely or to severely restrict the use of the drug. The FDA is currently reviewing those recommendations.
