The Ban Asbestos in America Act of 2007
On March 1, 2007, Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) re-introduced her bill, the Ban Asbestos in America Act of 2007, which was first introduced to the 107th Congress. Exposure to asbestos is known to cause serious diseases such as mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer and asbestosis.
Senator Murray’s proposed legislation has three major components:
1. A proposal for a national ban on importing, manufacturing, processing and distributing products that contain asbestos. It also calls for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to issue rules to make sure all asbestos products are off the shelves within two years’ of when the legislation is enacted.
2. Funding to expand research and treatment programs. Senator Murray’s proposed legislation includes the creation of a national registry for those that have been diagnosed with Mesothelioma and other asbestos-related illnesses.
3. A directive for the EPA to conduct a public education campaign to increase awareness of the dangers of exposure to asbestos or products that contain asbestos.
The important next step in this proposed legislation is to ask the senators serving on two important committees, the Environment and Public Works Committee and the Education, Labor and Pensions Committee to ask for their support.
While some have already agreed to serve as co-sponsors, you should contact your Senator(s) if they are on these committees to let them know that this legislation is important to you and your family.
