In the wake of the April 2010 BP oil spill disaster, a number of federal agencies have been actively involved in the cleanup of the environmental air, water and ground pollution that resulted in a spill considered to be the largest environmental oil spill in U.S. history.
Government Cleanup Report ReleasedIn order to evaluate the environmental devastation, the oil spill’s impact on Gulf waters, as well as the long term effects for the marine and wildlife that call the Gulf shores home, Navy Secretary Ray Mabus completed his report, which was submitted to President Obama on September 28, 2010.
Secretary Mabus’ recommendations to the President included:
Help for Business Owners and Individuals
In addition to the penalty fund, the President also ordered the creation of a $20 billion fund to compensate the thousands of business owners and individuals who faced devastating financial losses caused by the oil spill’s affects on the region's tourist industry, commercial and recreational fishing and water sports industries, and other affected businesses.
The owners, operators and employees of Gulf coast hotels, restaurants and retail businesses are all eligible to file claims to Kenneth Feinberg, appointed by the President to administer the Gulf Coast Compensation Fund (GCCF). Mr. Feinberg assumed that role on August 23, 2010.
In addition, commercial fishermen and shrimpers, those that operate or work at seafood processing facilities are eligible to submit Gulf oil spill claims to the GCCF.
The determination of eligibility and determining how to property submit documentation of current and expected financial losses is proving to be a daunting task for many affected businesses and individuals.
To that end, our lawyers are assisting the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association (FRLA) to represent both members and non-members to best present their claims.
