Gulf Coast Businesses Facing Financial Disaster after BP Oil Spill: Economic Toll Expected to Exceed $11.5 Billion
Our law firm, along with environmental advocate Erin Brockovich, have been meeting with owners and employees of countless businesses who are suffering financially because of the effects of the BP oil spill on their ability to earn a living.
IMPORTANT: If your livelihood or property is affected by the Gulf Coast oil spill, we urge you to seek the advice of a lawyer before signing job applications or other documents. You may be signing away your legal rights to take part in a class action lawsuit.
In the weeks following the April 2010 BP oil spill disaster, residents in the Gulf coast states affected by the BP oil spill have been facing the potential environmental water pollution and air pollution.
Even though the oil has not yet caused serious devastation to the Gulf coast shores or wetlands, these residents have already seen significant losses in income caused by the oil slick.
In May 2010, BVVA Compass had predicted the financial losses in the region to be at $3.4 billion. Less than three weeks later, BVVA more than doubled that estimate, which is now at $11.5 billion.
Commercial Fishing Industry Severely Affected
In Louisiana alone, approximately 30 percent of the state’s water has been closed to commercial fishermen who work the area to harvest fish and shellfish. While the owners and operators of commercial fishing vessels are unable to get their ships out to sea, their crew members and the employees at the countless seafood processing facilities have been forced out of work.
Other business owners facing potential financial catastrophe are the owners and employees of the thousands of charter fishing vessels, as well as scuba and snorkel excursion boats. Just one example is a Mississippi charter fishing boat owner, who told USA Today reporters that as of June 2010, he has incurred over $112,000 in cancellations.
Hotels, Restaurants and Retail Stores Also Facing Financial Disaster
The loss in tourist income has also affected the owners, operators and employees of the region’s hotels, golf and other resorts, casinos and vacation rental owners. Their lost reservations may lead to layoffs for those who depend upon their jobs at these facilities and the expected increases in hours, income and tips during the summer tourist season.
Likewise, the loss of visitors to the region is already being seen at restaurants, retail stores and businesses that rent bikes, scooters, surfing, golf and other equipment to vacationers.
