BP Oil Spill: Information from our law firm for fishermen, tourism businesses and property owners
Our law firm, together with other lawyers has filed a lawsuit on behalf of the commercial fishermen, business owners and families who face significant economic loss from the BP oil spill.
IMPORTANT: If your livelihood or property is affected by the spill, we urge you to seek legal counsel before signing job applications or other documents. You may be signing away your legal rights to take part in a class action lawsuit.
On April 20, 2010, a devastating explosion and fire occurred aboard the Deepwater Horizons, an oil rig operating on behalf of BP, plc, a UK-based oil company operating in the U.S. under their BP Products and BP America, Inc. subsidiaries.
A number of workers aboard the rig were injured when the explosion occurred, and 11 men remain missing and are presumed dead.
Oil Rig Sinking Caused Massive Spill in the Gulf
When the oil rig sank, it caused an oil spill of devastating proportions. The damaged rig has caused over 5,000 barrels of oil to spill into the gulf. That means that over 210,000 gallons of oil, with a total combined weight of more than 11.8 million pounds, is contaminating Gulf waters each and every day.
The water pollution that has resulted from the oil spill will have serious environmental impacts for the Gulf area region for months (and perhaps years) by the thousands of birds and other wildlife that come into contact with the oil slick that will require treatment.
Economic Impacts for Business and Property Owners
The commercial fishermen in the Gulf area will also be facing catastrophic damage to their businesses. One-fifth (1/5) of the total U.S. commercial seafood production, and almost three-quarters (3/4) of the nation's shrimp output is farmed in Gulf waters in Florida, Louisiana and Mississipp. In Louisiana alone, the workers in the state’s $3 billion fishing industry farm almost one-third (1/3) of the shrimp, red snapper, marlin and kingfish caught in the Gulf.
The owners and employees of gulf coast golf and other leisure resorts, businesses that cater to tourists, owner/operators of leisure fishing expedition boats are facing not only potential property damage, but the disruption of their businesses may cause an already financially-strapped business to fail.
Finally, the families who also own gulf coast properties—both real estate and private boats—face damage to their property.
