On April 20, 2010, an explosion and fire aboard the Deepwater Horizon, an oil rig engaged in drilling operations on behalf of BP Oil, caused a chain of events that injured a number of crew members and claimed the lives of 11 men working on the doomed rig and caused an environmental disaster many consider to be the world’s most serious oil spill.
Oil Spill Cleanup Workers Report Health Problems
Countless individuals who worked to contain the spill or assisted in crude oil spill cleanup efforts were exposed to many toxic chemicals in the crude oil and oil treated with crude oil dispersants, and are now reporting symptoms of a number of serious health problems.
In addition, those exposed to weathered crude oil as part of the oil spill remediation efforts are also at risk.

The photos above are examples of crude oil and oil treated with chemical dispersants.
Those affected include:
*Fishermen, ship owners and crews that worked as part of the Coast Guard’s Vessels of Opportunity (
*Those involved in the cleanup of beaches and wetlands that were contaminated by tar balls;
*Those that helped to lay boom to prevent oil slicks from reaching their shores;
*Workers who helped to decontaminate boats that came in contact with oil slicks; and
*Those that helped to spray chemical dispersants.
Oil Spill Contamination
Scientists and environmental experts studying oil spill chemical contamination caused by the BP oil spill are now researching the long-term health effects for those that came in direct contact with crude oil and oil treated by chemical dispersants.
Crude oil is known to contain a number of potentially toxic chemicals, including benzene and many other volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and heavy metals, including lead. The spill also caused the crude oil to begin a process known as “weathering” which is known to cause the oil’s chemical makeup.

In addition, the oil slicks treated with chemical dispersants also caused those who worked with or near the areas where dispersants were used to face exposure to other toxins, including benzene.
Studies of health problems experienced by workers involved in the cleanup of oil spills in other parts of the world were at high risk for long-term health problems that could affect virtually every part of the body, including the respiratory system, central nervous system and kidney and liver functions.
