Dementia Pugilistica Information
Dementia pugilistica is a neurological disorder which affects the central nervous system and causes brain damage.
The symptoms of dementia pugilistica include dementia, characterized by loss of cognitive function, and Parkinson's disease, a neurological disorder characterized by tremor and muscular rigidity. Dementia pugilistica is caused by the effects of recurring head trauma, such as repeated blows to the head.
Although it is usually encountered by retired boxers, it can be found in other sports such as football and soccer. When these athletes are hit or punched in the head many times during the course of their professional careers, the cumulative effect of the concussions they suffer can have serious effects on the brain.
Former professional boxer Jerry Quarry died in 1999 at age 53 after suffering dementia pugilistica for over 14 years. Boxing legend Muhammad Ali has suffered from Parkinson ’s Disease for many years stemming from head injuries he sustained during his professional boxing career.
