Man exposed to asbestos as a builder many decades ago dies of lung cancer
In recent news, a former builder died from lung cancer contracted through working with asbestos when in his 20s.
The 61-year-old grandfather of four, who was born and raised in Brooklyn, had beaten cancer three times, but was diagnosed about four years ago with asbestos-related cancer, and at the time was given only two-and-a-half years to live.
After receiving this diagnosis, he quickly began to travel internationally and logged so many miles, his children began to jokingly refer to him as the "jet-setter."
By all accounts, he was an inspiration to friends and family, who reportedly said he tackled each incidence of cancer with great courage.
Why builders are at risk for asbestos disease
Asbestos has a particular resistance to heat and most chemicals. Because of these properties, asbestos fibers have been used in a wide range of manufactured goods, including those used by builders and other tradespeople: roofing shingles, ceiling and floor tiles, paper and cement products.
For this reason, the building and construction trades are at risk for exposure to asbestos, as are insulators, plumbers, pipefitters, electricians, sheet metal workers, roofers, bricklayers, painters, and steel workers.
Any construction worker or builder may be exposed occur during maintenance, remodeling, renovation or demolition of older buildings.
