CANCER IN HANNAH
MONTANA'S FAMILY
Grandfather of Disney pop star Hannah Montana died of mesothelioma cancer

Prior to becoming a respected Kentucky state legislator, Hannah Montana’s grandfather – Ron Cyrus (father to country music singer Billy Ray Cyrus) - worked in a steel mill where he likely came into direct contact with the asbestos materials that led to his death three years ago from mesothelioma cancer.

The attorneys at the personal injury law firm of Weitz & Luxenberg have decades of experience defending victims’ rights in practice areas that include: accidents/general injury, dangerous drugs, medical malpractice, and environmental pollutants.

Mesothelioma cancer strikes Hannah Montana’s family

August 19, 2009 – The grandfather of pop star Miley Cyrus, star of the hit Disney Channel show “Hannah Montana,” died several years ago from the most deadly of asbestos-related cancers: mesothelioma.

In an interview this year with the Mesothelioma & Asbestos Awareness Center, the teenage star discussed her hit show “Hannah Montana,” her new movie, and the circumstances of her paternal grandfather’s death from mesothelioma cancer.

Miley’s grandfather was a steelworker before returning to college and becoming a leader in the AFL-CIO and a Kentucky state legislator. It is most likely that he contracted mesothelioma by coming in contact with asbestos when working with steel, the Mesothelioma Center reported.

Asbestos is a known carcinogen and the primary cause of mesothelioma and other fatal diseases, such as lung cancer and asbestosis.

Ron Cyrus died of mesothelioma cancer on February 28, 2006.

Mesothelioma cancer in Hannah Montana's family

Despite the fatal health consequences associated with asbestos exposure, asbestos is still imported and used in the United States for its insulation properties. The United States imported and used an estimated 1,820 tons of asbestos in 2007, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Government sources estimate that in the next decade more than 35,000 people nationwide will be diagnosed with the deadliest form of asbestos-related cancer, mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is most often the result of asbestos exposure on jobs – and usually contracted through employers’ blatant disregard for the health and safety of their workers.
